#30 Men’s Pastor provides the map to Being A Godly Man – Kenny Luck Part 1

As a young boy Pastor Kenny Luck was ignored and therefore was always seeking attention and Love. He found unlimited Love and a feeling of self-worth when he fell to his knees and accepted Jesus.

“But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us” – Proverbs 5:8

  1. As men we are hard-wired to compete, but there are places where it makes sense to compete and places where it doesn’t like in relationships.
  2. Compete for better character and for better relationships with God and people. Compete to be someone better.
  3. Biggest Weakness – The ability to share personal testimony in more private settings. You don’t hide a light under a lamp and you shouldn’t hide Jesus from non-believers.
  4. Biggest Strength – Being teachable. Seek out those that are better in every aspect of life and learn from them.
  5. Dark Time – Kenny had many dark times. When he was young he was a military brat and his dad was an alcoholic. He was either gone from the family or drunk and his mom was forced to raise 7 children largely alone. Kenny felt ignored and questioned “am I worthy of Love?” He had many behavioral issues as a child and young man in an attempt to earn approval.
  6. At 17 after a party, Kenny felt completely alone, fell to his knees and asked “Jesus, if you’re real I want to see you.” A palpable presence entered his room and he could feel I love you, you’re OK…I’m God.
  7. Growing up church wasn’t a place of meaning it was obligation.
While on the UCLA campus Kenny found the Campus Crusade for Christ and his mentor Matt Booker.

#29 Coaching Sports While Creating Men of God – Ron Nelson

Coaching sports is a privilege for Ron Nelson who believes that it is a great opportunity to introduce Jesus to athletes as well as their parents. If you’re an athlete, parent or grandparent, this is a show that will engage you in a new way of thinking about team sports.

“Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding;in all your ways submit to him and he will make your paths straight” – Proverbs 3:5-6

  1. Ron Nelson is a man who seeks out Jesus every day.
  2. Ron is a coach at FCA and talks to athletes to let them know who Jesus is and brings them to the church.
  3. Biggest Weakness – The Flesh. When he was young Ron was told pornography was something men do and cursing was how you express yourself. To combat temptation he has gotten rid of TV and has no computer that isn’t communal.
  4. Biggest Strength – The ability to training young people to get up in front of people and speak, teach and coach.
  5. When it became clear all that Jesus had done for Ron he was able to be devout. When he’s not focused upward, it’s too easy to slip backward.
  6. Dark Time – Athletes are very susceptible to darkness because of what’s available to them. If they don’t have purpose they will not be able to fend off vanity and the trappings of fame, money and notoriety.
  7. Ron is so involved in FCA because he knows the dark side and he knows that sports careers end. What’s next? How do we help these kids to be more successful? The answer is to teach them to use their skills for God’s glory.
  8. When Ron was playing baseball in college his 2nd baseman Paul Cunningham began inviting him to pray. Although Ron wouldn’t pray, he trusted Paul and after 2 months went to his church. That evening he accepted the Lord.
  9. Baptized in Costa Mesa at age 21.
  10. Ron was train wrecked by the amount of grace available to him and sites Les Miserables’ story as an amazing example of what grace looks like.
  11. Ron asks the questions of his athletes, “Why do you think you were created?” and “Where do you get your truth?”
  12. Ron’s church is the Northpark Community Church in Clovis.
  13. Best Advice – Dennis Rogers said have courage and don’t be afraid to make mistakes.
  14. Ron is part of Clovis High men’s group with coaches.

Favorite Charity – FCA

Recommended Book – “3D Coaching” by Jeff Duke

There’s so much pressure on sports now that the fun is gone and making it fun again is crucial.

People don’t care how much you know until they know how much you care.

#28 Satan vs Jesus and the man who lived through it! – Joe Jarvies

After surviving many brushes with death, a business relationship with a mobster and turning down a billion dollar deal in the oil industry, Joe Jarveis gave himself to the Holy Spirit and became a true God’s man of Influence.

Verse John 3:16 “For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.”

  1. Biggest Weakness – Fallibility of being a man.
  2. Biggest Strength – Knowledge of the Word of God.
  3. Joe was forced into religion as a child and at age 13 walked away from God and enabled Satan to gain a foothold in his life.
  4. At the age of 39 after many trials he asked Jesus into his life and confessed that he was a man of sin on October 8th, 1984. His life changed right then.
  5. Joe’s wife said his conversion was a con and he knew it was Satan trying to get him back.
  6. Dark time – Up until age 40 Joe was always planning for the future and was constantly being threatened by Satan. He was born as a breach, was in a plane crash at age 3, in 2 car crashes before age 5, blown off the Bay Bridge and blown back on at age 5 etc….
  7. At age 37 Joe found himself in the home of a head of a mafia family in the south. Soon he was buying a home from him and they were friendly. For some reason the man admitted that he had killed Bobby Kennedy. He was an old man and didn’t know why he told Joe, but 2 weeks later he was indicted and put under house arrest for the rest of his life.
  8. Joe felt during this time period he was going to die at any time.
  9. A big realization was when Joe saw the evilness of money. The people at the top of the energy industry were being run by an evil power. At this time, Joe turned down a funding package that would’ve made him a Billionaire.
  10. Joe was shaken deeply when he fell asleep behind the wheel and heard a voice from the backseat say to “take the deal” and then heard a voice in his mind saying “come follow me”.
  11. Next the IRS seized his assets and a Lawyer friend offered to pay off his ranch so that Joe wouldn’t lose it. He ended up hiding the money in Europe and Joe saw another sign that he was being assaulted by Satan.
  12. The final straw was when Joe befriended an elderly woman who gave him scriptures and was being starved by her 2 children. She died soon after Joe tried to convince her to do something about her kids.
  13. It took Joe 2 weeks to convince the head of a church to to baptize him, but he finally was in October of 1984.
  14. God sent 2 mentors to Joe who lived with him for 3 months. They lived in the word dissecting one scripture a day.
  15. A man came into Joe’s life who gave him $750 every week for 6 weeks as long as he studied the Word.
  16. Joe entered into Real Estate in early 2000’s.
  17. Advice – Accept God into your life and then ask the Holy Spirit for guidance.
  18. God’s Men of Influence – Do not allow mediocrity into his life. He will be an influence for those coming to him looking for the Word of God.
  19. The only time Joe prays is when he’s interceding on behalf of someone.
