#19 Prison Turns Ex-con Into Pastor – Pastor Bob Tucker

  1. Biggest Weakness – Bob has trouble sometimes trusting God absolutely. Recently he had open heart surgery and was reminded to trust God. It’s a challenge from day to day.
  2. Biggest Strength – Knowing that he is weak reminds him to stay vigilant.
  3. Dark Time – When Pastor Bob facing 23 years in prison spent 2 years locked up not knowing the outcome.
  4. Pastor Bob’s transformation – During that 2 years of uncertainty a transformation took place. He now considers prison a time out and a chance to relearn the person he wanted to be. Many times he prayed “Lord all I want is to be a Godly man”, but he had all the attributes that were the opposite. He spent day and night in his cell with the Lord.
  5. Incarceration – Pastor Bob was sentenced to only 7 years. In prison there were moments when his life was threatened when he was asked to stray from his new path and refused. Ultimately, becoming a true Christian garnered him respect and he was left alone. He believed it was a test of his faith.
  6. While in prison, Pastor Bob helped others transform as well. He learned to trust that God would bring people to him when they were open and needed to hear the Word.
  7. Joining Society – Getting out of jail was a difficult adjustment. Pastor Bob was constantly worried that he would make a mistake by accident and be sent back, but soon the Holy Spirit calmed him and gave him a purpose.
  8. Pastor Bob opened a recovery halfway house for those recently out of prison.

  10. To Be A God’s Man of Influence – You must become a walking testimony of change. Use words only when necessary.

  12. He was baptized on the prison yard.
  13. Best advice – The only battle worth winning, requires surrender and is between the Flesh and the Spirit.

#18 God uses you in so many things – Peter Oakman

“But God is so rich in mercy and he loves us so much, that even though we are dead because of our sins he raised Christ from the dead” – Ephesians 2:4

  1. Peter is a humble blessed Christian, husband and father.
  2. Peter’s arrogant attitude about his family member who became pregnant out of wedlock, led him to his favorite verse. He met an ex-prostitute/drug-addict from New Zealand on a plane who heard his story, read him Ephesians 2:4, and said you must love that family member no matter what, the way God loves me.
  3. Biggest Weakness – Worrying about the future and living in God’s peace. Stresses about living up to expectations.
  4. Biggest Strength – Implement Jesus’s teachings and spread the word through all types of people.
  5. To experience God’s voice Peter pays attention to how he feels and it becomes undeniable. He says pay attention to the nudge in your heart and ask God if it’s him.
  6. Dark Time – Freshman & Sophomore year of college spent partying a lot and living selfishly. He thought that going to church on Sundays was enough to be a good Christian. Spent too much time drinking and trying to hook up with girls.
  7. Went to Florida for the summer and decided to let God in. Peter went to church and met a girl who invited him to a pool party. Her friends were happy, joyful people and they showed him how to have fun being a Christian and having a relationship with God.
  8. Biggest Obstacle – Going back to school and seeing a drinking buddy who said he was being lame.
  9. Best advice – Open your heart and let God work on the small things. Don’t overlook the simple ways God wants to speak to you.
  10. God’s Man of Influence means to be blessed, loved and used by God.

#17 Spiritual Growth Happened When He Looked Internally – Andrew Salter

“There is no fear in love; but perfect love casteth out fear: because fear hath torment. He that feareth is not made perfect in love.” – John 4:18

  1. Biggest Weakness – Being too busy which Andrew calls “burden under Satan’s yoke”
  2. Biggest Strength – Building Relationships and being intentional.
  3. Dark Time – Andrew felt broken and kept going to church and finding no answers.
  4. Andrew became a part of “Young Life” a worldwide non-profit. He was so moved by the joy and focus on God the members had that he found his purpose in serving Christ. Blog
  5. He asked Christ to enter his heart and felt an extreme calm.
  6. Best Advice – Take an honest look at your life. Pray to God to reveal your purpose and be patient and listen.
  7. To be a God’s Men of Influence you must be an imitator of Christ.
  8. Andrew prays in the morning and whenever he needs to talk with God.
  9. At age 22 he recommitted himself to Christ and was baptized on a backpack trip atop a glacier in British Columbia.
  10. Best Advice he was ever given – Be memorable, not for your own sake, but for God.

#16 Through Rehab and Prayer He Found Rigorous Honesty – Tony Swies

“There is no fear in love. But perfect love drives out fear, because fear has to do with punishment. The one who fears is not made perfect in love” – John 4:18

  1. John was a feaful person who’s fear manifested itself as anger and violence.
  2. Biggest Weakness – Moment by moment obedience
  3. John feels he is sinful by nature and must be in constant conversation with God
  4. Darkest Time – Divorce. Allowing himself to be deceived by his financial success John felt entitled to drink. After 8 years of sobriety, he found himself drinking in his car alone and his family imploded soon after amidst physical violence.
  5. Turning Point – Screaming match led to his wife leaving with his children. After many calls to her he dialed the phone and threatened suicide only to hear his son screaming on the other end.
  6. Becoming A Better Man – Alcohol had become his solution and when he became sober he had to relearn his life.
  7. Changing Influence – Pastor Bob confronted John at Rehab and taught him to be Rigorously Honest by not telling him to do anything, but rather he made suggestions.
  8. Best advice – Have a sense of urgency
